Laura Vals

Laura Vals is an Argentinian-born painter and draughtswoman based in Aix-en-Provence. Her international experience and studies in painting, graphic design, visual communication and illustration have contributed to her work, which borrows from cubism and structuralism.

She has had 12 solo exhibitions and 5 group shows, with themes relating to immigration, the land, topography and distance.

"My memory clarifies contours, fixes lines, and my imagination takes care to give the subjects represented colors and shapes they sometimes never had." The essentially structural search for balance in representation - in which shapes, lines, planes, volumes and transparencies play a major role - lends these works the impression of an effacement of the painted subject, the primary bearer of the artist's inspiration. Through these compositions, the artist opens her work to the recognition of keys to assembly and balance, a game of interpretation that signals complexity, richness and value.

 

These points of anchorage and strength, as the exhibitions progress, become familiar as the basis of an artist's production: flat tints of color, lines, stripes and planes play on their complementarity to offer contrasting and harmonious partitions, smooth and rough, competing and ultimately reconciled in the search for the subject represented. The red thread of an artistic creation, these constant choices happily confirm the originality and technicality of a work of conviction and personal commitment.
